What We Do At SCIL
We serve persons who are disabled, regardless of the disability or their age!
Advocacy - Social Security application assistance; consultation and representation
for administrative law appeals; self-advocacy; ADA compliance, and MediCAL and Medicare eligibility; as well as 504 and Individual
Education Plans.
Assistive Technology (AT) - The Assistive Technology Program uses an accessible vehicle
(ATV) as a mobile office and demonstration center visiting local communities, providing information on assistive devices (tools
for daily living), as well as resources and funding options to help persons acquire the AT that will increase or maintain
their independence.
Cell Phone Program
- Hurricane Katrina demonstated the importance of communication in an emergency. Cell phones, limited to 911 calls, are reconditioned
and distributed to eligible people with disabilities and seniors in the East San Gabriel Valley, free of charge. For information
about this program call Paul Hernandez at the West Covina Office.
Communications - Readers for the blind and/or visually impaired and sign
language interpreters are available through the registry maintained by SCIL.
Deaf Services - Staff is available at the Center to provide peer counseling for
anyone who is deaf or hard-of-hearing. We maintain a registry fo certified interpreters---independent contractors who will
work as interpreters for businesses and government agencies.
Housing - Up-to-date lists of affordable housing, self-advocacy training,
ADA compliance issues, and landlord/tenant mediation. SCIL is a source for information and referral.
Independent Skills Training - Orientation to community resources and transportation, budget
and/or menu planning. Under contract with LA Care, we offer the Living Well with a Disability program.
Information and Referral
(I&R) - SCIL acts as a Community
Disability Resource Center on a wide range of disability-related topics.
Newsletter - Published quarterly, covering timely topics
and current disability-related issues.
Peer Counseling - A majority of the SCIL staff has a significant disability. Based
on their personal experience, they provide Peer Counseling to consumers.
Personal Assistance Referral - We maintain a personal care provider registry as well as
make referrals to agencies such as the Personal Assistance Services Council (PASC) for In Home Support Service (IHSS) regarding
personnel to provide care in the home.
Support Groups - Staff provides Support Group facilitator training and I&R
to local groups.
Workshops - Consumer groups meet once a quarter to obtain up-to-date information
on a wide variety of disability-related topics. Experts from outside agencies, such as the LA Housing Authority, visit these
groups and share information about available services.
Youth Program - Students with disabilities
who are transitioning from school to work and independence, intern at SCIL, where they learn to be part of the work environment
and develop transferable skills, mentored by adult professionals who are disabled.
